What is VMware?

VMware is a virtualization and cloud computing software provider based in Palo Alto, California. Founded in 1998, VMware is a subsidiary of Dell Technologies. EMC Corporation originally acquired VMware in 2004; EMC was later acquired by Dell Technologies in 2016.

Why VMware?

Following are few reasons why you might want to think about virtualization for your environment:

  •  Run multiple operating systems on one server.
  • You can have multiple flavours of OS on one server.
  • Multiple OS running on the server shares the hardware resources among them.
  •  Allocate hardware resources to different applications based on the utilization.
  •  High availability and business continuity. If VMware is implemented properly, you can migrate a virtual machine from one server to another server quickly without any downtime.
  • This reduces the operational cost and power consumption.

The Two V's of VMware -   Vcentre & Vsphere

VMware vSphere is a suite of virtualization applications that includes ESXI and vCenter Server.

VMware vCenter Server allows for the management of multiple ESXI servers and virtual machines (VMs) from different ESXI servers through a single console application.

VMware NSX - Network Virtualization

VMware NSX is the virtualization of entire networks in software, otherwise known as SDN(software defined networking).

Key Features of NSX

  •          Switching
  •          Routing
  •         Distributed Firewalling
  •          Load Balancing
  •         VPN
  •          NSX Gateway
  •      Microsegmentation

DEFINING MICRO-SEGMENTATION

Micro-segmentation with VMware NSX® moves beyond traditional firewalls by giving you the power to divide your data center into distinct segments, each with its own protection.

VMware NSX offers:

·         Security that is inbuilt with  the architecture itself, rather than integrated.
·         Rich context into applications and workloads while also isolating assets from threats.
·         Security policies are specific to each virtual network, virtual machine, and operating system, providing unprecedented micro granularity .
